Book Review - Who moved my cheese?

July 11, 2018 0 Comments

Book - Who moved my cheese?

Author - Dr. Spencer Johnson

Who moved my cheese?
This book is very simple, yet meaningful. There’s a story inside the other where a group of people meet for a reunion and then one amongst them starts narrating this beautiful story which has four little characters (two mice – Sniff, Scurry and two little people – Hem, Haw) who run through a maze looking for cheese and find one at the end of Cheese Station C.

When the cheese supply is over, Sniff and Scurry right away start looking for new cheese because they didn’t wish to complicate things, while Hem and Haw wait at Station C, cribbing about their bad luck.
Sniff and Scurry’s search for new cheese in the maze finally ends with them finding new cheese, while on the other hand Hem and Haw wait at  Station C in hopes of finding their cheese turns unfruitful. After waiting for a few days, Haw finally gathers some courage and realizes that there’s was no point in waiting any further. He persuades  Hem to start their search for new cheese but Hem is reluctant to do so and stays back.  Haw’s lone search for cheese continues with no success for a few days. At times he feels like giving up t hope and  to return but the determination of finding  the new cheese keeps him going and  he finally finds it.

Which character are you? - Hem, Haw, Sniff and Scurry

At the end of the story, all the friends reunite and  imagine themselves as Hem at many situations where they failed. They realize that the only reason behind it was the resistance to change. That’s what happens in real life, but  like Sniff, Scurry and  Haw, we too should not give up in order to progress in life. If I had to  pick another best part about the book it would have to be the lines that Haw leaves behind for Hem. It contains a lot of learnings that he experiences over his journey which is worth following by each one of us.

Bucket List

June 17, 2018 2 Comments
Do you have a bucket list? I'm sure you would be having one but never realized, it is called bucket list. Let me make it easier by calling it as your wish list. If you don't have it then I urge you to have one.

Bucket List
What is a Bucket List?
Before that let me tell you what is a Bucket List? Bucket List is anything & everything that you wish to do before you die. It could "a dream that you wish to fulfill, a goal that you want to achieve or a life experience that you wish to experience before you die."

These days people do give it a lot of importance as 'Life is so unpredictable', you are clueless what is going to happen next. You never know while you were working so hard, day in and out assuming you have the rest of the life to do what you want but unfortunately that's not possible anymore. Just like the characters from the novel 'Fault in our stars' who are diagnosed with Cancer and are about to die, we don't know what future holds for us.
So, why not achieve, fulfill what you desire? I too have my bucket list which I almost completed and left it due to the busy life.

Inspiration - Marathi movie Bucket List
Only after watching Bollywood's evergreen beauty Madhuri Dixit's debut Marathi movie Bucket List on how a 40-year old woman who takes the task of checking off the wish-list of a teenaged heart donor, I realized how important it is to have a bucket list. The movie revolves around her adventures-turned-misadventures journey where her choices defines a newer version of her. You should definitely watch this movie for it's sheer meaning in a simple way. I have again shifted my attention towards my bucket list and have decided to add few things and started working towards fulfilling it. It could be big or small,  it all depends on you as it's your list. You could also have a couple or family bucket list.

Making a bucket list
Few things that I had in my bucket list as a teenager were -
✔️ Going for a night out to a friend's place (as my mom still is against it but somehow managed to go to one of my girl friend's house 😛)
✔️ Visiting a place where there's snow (went to Manali for my college Industrial Visit)
✔️ Clubbing
✔️ Celebrating my birthday in GOA
✔️ Buying a scooty for my 21st birthday
✔️ Scuba diving so on and so forth

Happily completed the above ones & now I have  another one 😄 You can create yours as well. Let me help you with few -
  • Travelling to a foreign country (as it is cheaper these days & like I always say you should travel, it is a wonderful experience)
  • Learning something new that you always wished for but never gave it a thought (dancing, singing, baking, learning a new language..)
  • Some experiences (scuba diving, parasailing, sky diving or any kind of sport)
  • Helping someone in need
Psychologists also suggest that you should have a bucket list.

Psychology also favors having bucket list

You can also ask yourself few questions like

"What if I were to die tomorrow? What would I wish to do before I die?"

and your list would be ready. This would also help you in discovering yourself - a new you :) Take a pen and a paper, start writing!

Cooking Fever

April 02, 2018 1 Comments
After writing a few reviews on mouth watering food, I realized that the real magic comes from the person who has cooked it. "Eating is a necessity but cooking is an art". It has been years that we have been enjoying the delicious food made by our mothers, spouses, chefs & the list goes on. Seldom we realize, how they cook. It is said that real cooking is more about following your heart than following the recipes but then in today's fast paced world, we are more dependent on other sources in order to learn this art.

Cooking is like love

I recently happened to watch this amazing Marathi movie 'Gulabjaam' & it really impressed me with it's story on how a successful banker(Siddharth Chandekar) working abroad leaves his job to find way for his passion. He reaches Pune to his friend's place where he tastes a sweet made by his friend's tiffin service cook. The sweet dish makes him nostalgic. He is hell bound in learning to cook from this lady(Sonali Kulkarni). He leaves no stone upturned & makes all the efforts to learn cooking from her. She has a different story where she happens to loose her memory except for the art of cooking which helps her to keep going in life. After crossing all the hurdles in his life personally & professionally, he still doesn't give up on his passion. Having successfully learnt the art of cooking, he flies abroad & opens his own restaurant so that he can spread the happiness to others which comes from amazing food. Gulabjaam is a movie which teaches us ‘to follow your dreams and see what they lead you to.’ A must watch!

Gulabjaam
I will always be a foodie by choice because I have the best cook around me. We must really appreciate them for the amazing food that they serve us especially our mothers. They cook for us with so much love that your mouth won't stop watering. So at times, we should show them some gratitude. It is not their duty to cook but they do it lovingly for us. Nothing can stop them from cooking that special dish for us when we feel like having one. Even if they are sick, they will still fulfill your wish & stop your craving. Therefore, least we can do is appreciate & show some love and praise them for what they do selflessly.
